Classroom Management
In
the classroom I use several different behavior management techniques. As a teacher I believe it is important to
reward and discipline my scholars.
Discipline:
Clip System
Buddy Rooms
Clip System
During
my first year of teaching I used a clip system.
The clip system worked very well and my scholars respond to it
well. Normally in the classroom there
are three colors, a red, yellow and green.
In my classroom we had clips and our colors ranged from orange, blue,
white, green, yellow and red. During the
day the scholars have the opportunity to move up and down. They start on white each day and during the
day the choices that they make determine the way their clips move. At the end of the day the scholars have their
final color written on a behavior chart along with comments made by the teacher
that coincides with why and how they landed on that color.
Buddy Rooms
Another
discipline system that we came up with at our school was called Buddy
Rooms. The whole purpose of buddy rooms
was to give the scholars a chance to go to another classroom, which is known as
their “Buddy Room”, to calm down and then they could return back to their
original class. The buddy room was a
teacher in another grade level that had a cool down space in their class. While in the classroom the scholar could fill
in a behavior form that described what they did, what they could have done
differently and if they hurt another person in the process, should they
apologize. The scholar would also have
relevant work sent with them to complete for the half day.
Rewards:
100% Jar
Treasure Chest
Scholar Dollars
100% Jar
The
100% was a way to reward the whole class when caught by myself or another
teacher doing the right thing as a class.
For instance if another teacher sees my class in the hallway in hall
position and compliments them then they will receive a fuzzy in the jar. Once we fill the jar up then they are allowed
a special prize as a class. The 100% jar
really teaches the scholars how to work together as a class to accomplish a big
goal.
Treasure Chest
The
treasure chest is something that I use in my class as an incentive for my
scholars to do well and reach for that “orange” behavior. If a scholar gets on orange for at least 4
days out of the week and has a parent signature then they can go to the treasure
chest on Friday.
Scholar Dollars
Scholar
dollars is something that my current school does. At any time a scholar could receive a scholar
dollar. If a teacher sees phenomenal
behavior or if they show enthusiasm when learning all the way to eating all of
their food for lunch they could receive a scholar dollar. At the end of the week a scholar dollar store
comes to the class and the scholars can buy different things like pencils,
erasers and notebooks.
